Abia state government establishes Biomedical units across its health facilities

Abia State Government has established biomedical units across its health facilities aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, reducing equipment failure and improving maintenance of medical infrastructure in the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this while briefing Newsmen at the Government House Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to the Commissioner, the initiative is supported through a practical training programme for biomedical engineers and Ministry of Health personnel in collaboration with foreign engineers who are currently in the state.

Prince Kanu further said that the state government would distribute three million insecticide-treated mosquito nets in September this year as part of its malaria control strategy pointing out that the prevalence in the state had reduced from 16.5 per cent in 2024 to 11.5 per cent as at last year.

The Commissioner however said the State government is closely monitoring global health alerts following advisories issued by the World Health Organisation and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control over Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

On Infrastructure, Governor Otti would inaugurate 25 projects including the Onu Imo Tower Road, Abiriba–Ohafia Road, and Nunya–Isuikwuato roads, amongst others, as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the present administration.

Contributing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma said the government has expressed dismay with the high rates of violation against traffic rules in the state especially in the state capital and urged the road users to obey traffic rules as government would no longer tolerate such violations.
