ABIA RESIDENTS TO RECEIVE OVER THREE MILLION TREATED INSECTICIDE NETS

Abia State Government says it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria Railways Corporation (NRC) to construct a 200-metre link road across the railway axis in Umuahia to ease vehiclar movement.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this while briefing Newsmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu, explained that the construction would kick off the moment the design and scoping of the project is ready noting that the state government has commenced the renovation and equipping of one of the existing structures within the railway station to enable the relocation of the present police post.

According to the Commissioner, the road will stretch from Bende Road Junction by Umuwaya Road, around the Post Office Tower, through the railway crossing to the First Bank and Akanu Ibiam Road axis.

Prince Kanu also disclosed that the state government has intensified its urban renewal efforts in Umuahia with major interventions in flood control.

On health, the State Government, in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), will soon distribute over three million Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) across the 17 local government areas of the state.

According to him, Abia had not conducted a mass distribution campaign for insecticide-treated nets since 2010, adding that the new exercise would help strengthen the state’s fight against malaria.
